Replacing the cabin air filter and fuel filter in my 1997 Volkswagen Passat TDI diesel... or at least trying to. It seems I got a defective fuel filter. No amount of priming and purging the fuel lines could get the engine started and running with the new fuel filter; it must've had an air leak somewhere. I reinstalled the old filter and within a few cranks the engine was purring like a kitten. I noticed the new one was made in Spain instead of Germany, so maybe even MANN is cheapening out these days...

Anyway, the instructions I give are valid for any Mk3 Golf/Jetta, B4 Passat, or pre-2004 Mk4 Golf/Jetta TDI diesel. Older non-TDI diesels are similar as well, although diesels prior to 1989 do not have the thermostatic valve (held in by the clip) and extra fuel lines which cycle fuel through the injection pump and back into the fuel tank in cold weather to help keep the fuel from gelling. Also not all Mk3s came from the factory with a cabin air filter, although you can buy the housing to retrofit one into your car if it doesn't have it.

Volkswagen Passat
The Volkswagen Passat is a family car built by Volkswagen Passenger Cars through six design generations since 1973. Slotting between the Volkswagen Golf / Volkswagen Jetta, and the Volkswagen Phaeton in the current Volkswagen line-up, the Passat has been badged variously as Dasher, Santana, Quantum, Magotan, Corsar and Carat. More recently, Volkswagen has extended its range with the launch of the Passat CC, a 4-door "coupé" version of the Passat.

The nameplate Passat derives from the German word for tradewind — and the period in its history when Volkswagen named vehicles after prominent winds, including also Golf (after Gulf Stream), Jetta (after Jet stream), Bora (after Bora) and Scirocco (after Sirocco).
