Dodge Neon Starter

How to Change the Starter on a First Generation Dodge Neon

from wikiHow - The How to Manual That You Can Edit
Changing the starter on a neon can be a tricky proposition. If you don't want to unhook the engine and jack it out of the way, below is a suggested way to change it.

Steps

  1. Remove the terminals and the battery.
  2. Remove the battery box - there are about 8 bolts of varying sizes; including one hidden one on the rear, right hand side and two below the box which are difficult to get at (these do not have to be completely removed because the battery box has slots that slide around these bolts).
  3. Unhook the radiator hose from the radiator - make sure the car has not been running recently. Engine must be cold.
  4. Undo the four 10mm bolts holding the fan(s) in place (along the top).
  5. Reach in and unhook the fan(s) - there are clips holding the power plugs on.
  6. Pull the fan(s) out (the bottom of the fan assembly has tabs that fit in slots just behind the radiator).
  7. There are 2 wires going to the starter, unclip the first wire which just snaps in, and use a socket to remove the other wire.
  8. There are two 15mm bolts which hold the starter in; one is up near where the battery box was located and is very long. The other is down below the starter near the driver's side fan.
  9. Remove the starter.
  10. Place new starter where the old one was.
  11. Re-assemble and test.
