Will a bad O2 sensor or Tps throttle switch prevent a car from starting? This much I know for sure, a bad 02 sens. will prevent the car from running,because its function is to check the exhaust fumes on thier way out. It will not keep it from starting. On the other hand, a TPS can prevent the car from starting at all if it is bad. The function of the TPS is to send a signal to the computer telling it the position of the throttle plate so the comp. can send out signals to other parts or sensors on how much gas and air to deliver to the engine., thus always adjusting the idle o0r speed of the motor. If the TPS goes bad one thing that can happen is that the TPS sends out a signal to the comp. that says WOT/wide open throttle. the comp reads this and immediately shuts down all gas and air being sent to the throttle, making it almost impossible to start. If you look in an auto manual(like haynes) it shows you how to test a TPS. Takes about 20 mins. Some readings do not always come up when you scan your vehicles computer eithe; your starting problem can be one of many: Fuel pressure regulator, fuel pump or fuel pump module, elec. ignition module, starter relays etc. good luck! |
