An automatic transmission (also known as "AT" or "Auto") is an automobile gearbox
that can change gear ratios automatically as the vehicle moves, freeing the driver
from having to shift gears manually. Similar but larger devices are also used
for heavy-duty commercial and industrial vehicles and equipment. Most automatic transmissions have a set of possible gear ranges, often with a parking pawl feature that locks the output shaft of the transmission. Continuously variable transmissions (CVTs) can change the ratios over a range rather than between a set of gear ratios. CVTs have been used for decades in two-wheeled scooters but have only seen use in a few automobile models. Recently, however, CVT technology has gained greater acceptance among manufacturers and customers, especially in Nissan automobiles and gas-electric hybrid vehicles. Some machines with limited speed ranges or fixed engine speeds, such as some forklift trucks and lawn mowers, only use a torque converter to provide a variable gearing of the engine to the wheels. |
A manual transmission, or manual gearbox (also informally known as a 'manual', 'stick
shift', 'straight shift', or 'standard shift' is a type of transmission used
in motor vehicle applications. It generally uses a driver-operated clutch, typically
operated by a pedal or lever, for regulating torque transfer from the
internal combustion engine to the transmission, and a gear-shift, either operated
by hand (as in a car) or by foot (as on a motorcycle). Other types of transmission
in mainstream automotive use are the automatic transmission, semi-automatic
transmission, and the continuously variable transmission (CVT). From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia |
Before doing anything, always check transmission fluid or gear oil level first. |
Repair Choices • 3 Choices for Fixing your Transmission- |
• Repairing the Transmission • Install a Rebuilt or Re-Manufactured Transmission • Install a Salvage (used) Transmission. |
• Watch for leaks or stains under the car If there is a persistent red oil leak that you are sure is coming from your car, you should have your shop check to see if it is coming from your transmission or possibly from your power steering system (most power steering systems also use transmission fluid and leaks can appear on the ground in roughly the same areas as transmission leaks.) If all you see is a few drops on the ground, you may be able to postpone repairs as long as you check your fluid level often |
• Check fluid for color and odor Most manufacturers require that you check transmission fluid levels when the vehicle is running and on level ground. Pull the transmission dipstick out and check the fluid for color and odor. Transmission fluid is a transparent red oil that looks something like cherry cough syrup. If the fluid is cloudy or muddy, or it has a burned odor, you should have it checked by your technician who will most likely advise you to have a transmission drain and refill or transmission tune-up. |
• Be alert to new noises, vibrations and shift behavior A modern transmission should shift smoothly and quietly under light acceleration. Heavier acceleration should produce firmer shifts at higher speeds. If shift points are erratic or you hear noises when shifting, you should have it checked out immediately. Whining noises coming from the floorboard are also a cause for concern. If caught early, many problems can be resolved without costly transmission overhauls. |
